Shortcuts to Success?

There's no such thing as an overnight success. Fortune favors those who are willing to show up every day and earn it.

Being good at anything meaningful always takes more time than you'd like it to. You want something badly enough to pursue it, therefore you'd like the win as soon as possible. Everywhere you look, there's a tip, a trick, a hack, or just someone doing it better than you, and your ego starts to flare a little bit. With all of that going on in your head, it's easy to forget the basic tenet that success doesn't come in a day, it comes day by day.

Every overnight success you've ever heard of can show you the 10+ years of work that went into creating it.

That's why it's important to set reasonable expectations next to lofty goals. That's why it's important to remember that while there are only so many things in your control, luck is earned. That's why I'm writing a book on measuring meaningful sales activities instead of revenue outcomes.

Woody Allen is quoted as saying "80% of success is just showing up," but he only got it 80% right. 80% of success is just showing up every day.

Persistence and time are such huge parts of the equation, and you never know exactly how much persistence or how much time it's going to take. So you need to keep showing up, and you need to keep doing the things that you know will lead you to where you want to go.

What does that mean for you? What are the things that you know you need to do more of, and regularly, to achieve what you want to achieve?

You may need to do more prospecting. You may need to be more diligent about asking for the next steps and just earning that next meeting. You may need to get control of your calendar and your commitments (and have less tied up with each). You may need to take better care of yourself so that you can do more of all of the above.

I can tell you this, if you're spending any time looking for a shortcut, you're wasting time that you could be using to get meaningful work done. You can buy followers, but you can't engage them. You can discount your way to a signed contract, but that's not going to help you build loyalty. You can make a lot of promises, but your reputation is going to be earned on your results.

Your success is going to be determined by the things you show up and do routinely. What kind of success can you anticipate based on your routine?
